CAIRO/ISTANBUL, June 21 (MENA) - Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs Badr Abdelatty warned on Saturday that the current escalation in the Middle East region could lead to a broader conflict and result into unprecedented consequences on regional security and stability.

He stressed the urgent need for concerted efforts to halt the military escalation, reach a ceasefire and return to the negotiations.

Abdelatty made the remarks during his participation in the opening session of the 51st meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held Saturday in Istanbul, Turkey.

He stated that the region is currently witnessing a dangerous escalation following the Israeli attack on Iran in the early hours of June 13, describing it as a blatant violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.

He stressed that Egypt believes there is no military solution to this crisis and strongly condemns Israel’s continued attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, which violate international humanitarian law and relevant resolutions of both the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the UN Security Council resolutions that Israel continues to disregard.

The minister further stressed that addressing the Iranian nuclear file requires a comprehensive approach that tackles all related security concerns, including nuclear non-proliferation in the region.

He reiterated Egypt’s call for the establishment of a Middle East zone free of weapons of mass destruction and the implementation of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). (MORE)
