Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi stated that Egypt is entering the development phase of nuclear energy at the El Dabaa site, and that the agency strongly supports this project.

He emphasized the importance of supporting Egypt in this area, stressing that everything must be safe and secure in terms of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, as well as supporting development projects and using technology to protect human health and ensure water availability.

He confirmed the continued support for cooperation between Egypt and the Agency.

The director general expressed his gratitude to Egypt and to President Abdel Fattah El Sisi for his clear role in providing support for all parties involved in trying to reach a peaceful solution to the Iranian nuclear problem — an issue of great importance amid escalating tensions.

He noted that a comprehensive report has been issued covering several areas related Iran’s nuclear program, and that the Agency requires transparency in handling all matters.

He added that negotiations are currently ongoing between the United States and Iran, and all of this deserves full support in order to avoid conflict in a region that is already suffering.

He pointed out that the Agency plays an important role as a facilitator in reaching an agreement and stressed that trust is important, but not sufficient on its own, for verification is essential, “and there must be mechanisms for verification.” He noted that discussions with Iran are ongoing.

Grossi also mentioned that he would be meeting later today with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and emphasized the importance of Oman’s mediation efforts in the negotiations.

He said the Agency conducts inspections in Iran because the country is a permanent member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which allows inspectors to inspect Iranian nuclear facilities and obtain information and clarifications on any concerns to clarify matters and reach peaceful solutions.

Regarding whether Egypt is playing an indirect role in the negotiations between Iran and the United States on the Iranian nuclear file, Abdelatty said "we have full confidence in the Omani leadership and mediation, and we strongly support it. We must not forget that, prior to the start of this process, President Sisi warned several months ago that escalation is dangerous and unacceptable. Therefore, reaching peaceful solutions that spare the region complete chaos and a full-scale war is a fundamental line drawn by the president. We are ready to help in any way possible and to support the Omani mediation efforts to succeed." (MENA)
