CAIRO, June 17 (MENA) - House of Representatives Speaker Hanafy el-Gebaly referred at the beginning of the House's plenary session Tuesday a draft law submitted by the government regarding some provisions related to the laws on renting premises and reorganizing the relationship between landlords and tenants.
The draft law was referred to a joint committee comprising the Housing, Public Utilities and Construction Committee and the offices of the Local Administration and Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Committees.
The new draft replaces the previous government-drafted law submitted by the government to the House on April 28, 2025, which concerned some provisions related to the laws on renting premises.
The new draft law on old rent includes a transitional period of seven years for residential units and five years for non-residential units. It also includes the termination of old rental contracts and the liberalization of rental relationships, so that all rental contracts become subject to the provisions of the Civil Code, based on the will of both parties, after the end of the transitional period specified by law.
It also includes increasing the legal rental value of premises rented for residential purposes in distinguished areas by (twenty) times the current legal rental value, with a minimum amount of (1,000 pounds) and by (ten) times the current rental value for units located in medium and economic areas, with a minimum amount of (400 pounds) in medium areas, and (250 pounds) for units located in economic zones.
The committees will also determine the rental value due based on this classification. These committees are to complete their work within (three months) of the date the law comes into effect. (MENA)
