CAIRO, May 25 (MENA) – Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Sunday that Egypt aims to become a regional hub for the steel industry by boosting its competitiveness in global markets and expanding sectors where the country has a comparative advantage.

Madbouly made the remarks during a meeting to review challenges in the iron and steel sector and explore measures to support its growth. The meeting included Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Transport and Industry Minister Kamel el-Wazir, Supply and Internal Trade Minister Sherif Farouk, CEO of the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) Hossam Heiba, and executives from major steel companies.

The prime minister stressed the government’s commitment to localizing and deepening steel-related manufacturing to reduce reliance on foreign currency and support industrial supply chains. He highlighted the strategic importance of the sector and its contributions to construction, infrastructure, and manufacturing.

Cabinet spokesperson Mohamed el-Homsany said officials and industry leaders discussed obstacles facing steel producers and proposed measures to enhance growth and exports. Discussions also covered efforts to ensure local access to raw materials and regulate non-compliant factories under national standards.
