CAIRO, June 4 (MENA) - Cabinet Spokesperson Mohamed el-Homsani said the government attaches great importance to market stability by working to increase the supply of basic commodities, most notably red meat.
During a phone call to "Good Morning Egypt" (Sabah El Kheir Ya Masr) on Extra News Channel Wednesday, the spokesman said all relevant authorities - without exception - participate in the commodity provision system.
The abundant supply represents an effective tool for controlling prices, besides the state's regulatory efforts to monitor markets and prevent any price violations, Homsani added.
The Ministry of Agriculture, the National Service Projects Organization (NSPO) and the Ministry of Interior, together with the private sector, work on providing fixed and mobile sales outlets as part of the state's initiatives to provide food commodities at reduced prices to citizens in the various governorates, Homsani said.
He explained that these efforts came within the framework of ongoing monitoring by the Ministry of Supply, the Egyptian Competition Authority (ECA) and the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) to address any unjustified increase in prices and ensure the quality of products on offer, thus contributing to maintaining market stability and alleviating the burden on citizens' shoulders.
The government is exploring public-private partnerships to boost local production and increase imports from sisterly African nations to satisfy Egyptian market demands, according to the spokesman.
Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli held a meeting to follow up on the implementation of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi's directives to provide a secure strategic stockpile of basic commodities, most notably meat, with the approach of Eidul-Adha, Homsani said.
The goal is to secure citizens' needs not only during these occasions but throughout the year, he said.
The minister of agriculture and land reclamation reviewed the current status of meat production in Egypt during the meeting, stressing the need to support local production and expand organized imports from African countries, said the spokesman.
The minister also discussed the establishment of veterinary quarantines, slaughterhouses, and refrigerators in these countries to facilitate import operations and enhance trade cooperation to serve the country's food security, he added. (MENA)
