BAGHDAD, May 13 (MENA) - Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League (AL) Hossam Zaki confirmed that the 34th Arab Summit, scheduled to be held in Baghdad on Saturday, will address several significant political issues, with the Palestinian cause topping the agenda.
In remarks to accredited journalists at the AL, Zaki stated that the preparatory meeting of the Arab League Council at the level of permanent representatives, set for Wednesday, will discuss many draft resolutions, primarily those related to the Palestinian cause, the Arab-Israeli conflict, as well as developments in Libya, Sudan, Syria, Yemen and solidarity with Lebanon, among other matters.
He emphasized that the core message of the summit is that Arab states are determined to hold their summit regularly, a strong indication of their continued commitment to unity.
Regarding the expected level of attendance by leaders, Zaki noted that such matters are usually finalized in the final days before the summit. However, he expressed confidence that the level of representation would be “satisfactory.”
Responding to a question from the Middle East News Agency (MENA) about the potential for a resolution to support Gaza’s reconstruction, particularly in light of Egypt’s reconstruction initiative, Zaki explained that a decision to adopt the Arab reconstruction plan for Gaza had already been issued during the extraordinary Arab summit held in Cairo on March 4. Implementation, however, has been delayed due to Israel’s violations of the ceasefire agreement and the ongoing conflict, which he identified as the primary obstacle to progress.
He added that in his view, the plan does not necessarily need new funding decisions, but rather the right conditions to begin implementation. While financing is important, he believes it is not the main challenge. (MENA)
