JEDDAH, May 6 (MENA) - The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Radio and Television Union is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
Egyptian television and radio celebrity Amr el Leithy, 2010 UNESCO laureate, is leading the Union for the second consecutive session.
As digital media social media is becoming increasingly important recently, Leithy is giving special attention to digital content, paying special attention to artificial intelligence (AI) programs and applications for audiovisual media workers in member states.
The Union's mission is to promote a culture of peaceful coexistence in a multi-religious world, enhance the role of media in achieving this goal through news exchange, audio and video production, and program exchange, while organizing joint training programs for radio and television media cadres in OIC countries.
Headquartered in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the Union was established by the approval of the Sixth Conference of Foreign Ministers of Islamic Countries in 1975. Its General Secretariat was formed in 1977. The Union includes 57 Islamic countries in its membership.
According to the Union's charter, the president of the Union is chosen from among its member states, enjoying the rank of minister (Secretary General). (MENA)
